NVMe-RAID Background
The extreme performance of NVMe flash devices have led to great advancements in modern computing, enabling the adoption of All-flash storage to accelerate across industry segments, but not without challenges, namely RAID.
The wide bandwidth available on each NVMe device has rendered traditional bridge-based RAID cards unacceptable for anything but the smallest deployment. Software RAID on the other hand, can utilize all the bandwidth of an NVMe, but the simple RAID calculations used to protect the data at scale quickly become too processor intensive robing CPU resources, making the server unable to do much beyond the RAID 5/6 operations themselves.
Besides, with various of the workloads that require the performance of NVMe SSD, to protect the business continuity, using traditional RAID becomes a challenge to get the performance that NVMe SSD should performed. Current existing solutions, whether software RAID or hardware RAID, are incapable of driving more than 4 NVMe SSDs.
GRAID SupremeRAID™ does all the RAID function on an economical GPU, freeing-up the CPU to run the main application workloads.
The GRAID SupremeRAID™ comes in two models, users’ selection is based on qualified system/model. Please contact your Supermicro sales rep. for details. Supermicro’s SupremeRAID™ solutions are ONLY available for system level sales, using fully qualified and configured systems. Bill of materials of server will list two supermicro part numbers listed below in Parts list table under “SMCI PN”.
